Doctor Europeaus

The label of Doctor Europæus, introduced in 1992 by the Confederation of European Union Rectors’ Conferences, can be awarded when the following conditions are met:

  1. The thesis must be reviewed by at least two professors, belonging to different university institutions in two EU Member States, different from the one where the doctorate is being carried out;
  2. The Final Examination Board must be supplemented by at least one professor, belonging to a university institution of a European Union Member State, other than the one where the doctorate is being carried out;
  3. Part of the discussion of the thesis must be in a European language other than the national language of the country where the doctorate is being carried out (Italy);
  4. A study and research stay of at least three months must be carried out in a European State other than the one where the doctorate is being undertaken.

    The awarding of the Doctor Europæus label must be requested, once the third year of the course has been completed, when the application for the final examination is entered in the Reserved Area. It is up to the interested party to ensure that they meet the four requirements listed above, also by actively interacting with their Coordinator (for requirements no. 1 and 2) and with the Final Examination Board (for requirement no. 3).

Once the requirements have been verified, the label will be awarded and certified upon request to the PhD student.
